Presented by PECO, the Directors Cup Challenge was a resounding success.
“Mother Nature was on our side for the 97th Annual Directors Cup Challenge”, said director of events, Amanda Bates. She was right. Just a few days later, the Philadelphia region suffered under a debilitating heatwave.
The entire day was perfect. Players, sponsors, and volunteers enjoyed another great outing at the spectacular Union League Golf Club at Torresdale. Registration and lunch began at 10:30 am, allowing the golfers to take advantage of the driving range, networking, and enjoying lunch provided by returning sponsor, The Steamfitters Local Union 420. With everyone ready to go and waiting in the carts sponsored by Integrity Wealth Management, tee- off was on time, and began with a warm welcome from senior assistant golf professional, Matt Walbert. Within a matter of minutes, they were off.
During the play, each golfer had the opportunity to show off their skills at the various contests. It would not be a GNPCC outing without the chance to win a new Ford at hole #9. Each year, Chapman Ford Volkswagen generously sponsors the Hole in One prize, a Ford automobile. Kerry Petratos, Director of Commercial and Fleet Sales CRM at Chapman, emphasizes the winner is given a car. “It’s is not a lease; it is a car for the winner to own,” says, Petratos. Although there wasn’t a winner this year, we are counting on Chapman Ford Volkswagen to hold onto the vehicle for next year’s outing.
Other contests throughout the day were Longest Drive – Rob Streit won the men’s prize, Christine Costa won the women’s competition, and Jeff Byers won closets to the Pin. The Putting Contest was hot and heavy and narrowed from twelve finalists and it was a nail biter to the end. Thanks again to Philadelphia Federal Credit Union for sponsoring the putting contest year after year.
As the players rolled in for some welcomed cocktail hour refreshments, players, volunteers, and dinner guests enjoyed the annual ball toss, sponsored by Fast Signs Northeast Phila and won by Jeff Burger.
Hungry and anxious to start the auction, everyone enjoyed the spectacular buffet sponsored by Northeast Times. With over 80 auction items available, guests were eager to purchase tickets to see if they were the lucky winner. Sponsored by WSFS/Beneficial Bank, the successful and FUN auction was led by committee chair Charlie Kueny. There was just about something for everyone!
The time had come to announce the winning foursomes. It’s fun to talk to the players during the cocktail hour about how well they played. However, like any outing, it’s not until the end when the winners are reviled.

With a score of 67, the 3rd place foursome was: Bill Winters, Carmen Gambone, Kevin Grant, and Dave Shoudt. With a score of 66, the 2nd place foursome was: Kerry Petratos, Richard Burgess, Paul Yarbrough, and Mike Tukdarian. Lastly, the winning foursome of the day, with a score of 62, was awarded to Charlie Kueny, Tom Dowling, Jack Kelly, and Alan Sheppard. Congratulations to all the winners!
